Data Warehousing HOWTO

This paper will cover the design methodologies used in designing a data warehouse and the open source software available to bring it all together.

There are four sections to designing a data warehouse system.

Analysis and reverse engineering of the source data Creation of the consolidation database and subsequent data marts Extraction from the source databases Reporting on the extracted data We will cover each of these topics and give examples from experience. We will also cover the business reasons for data warehousing, and why a semi-custom open source system is better than current closed-source data warehouse systems. A knowledge of relational database systems will help in understanding the technical aspects covered.
