Data Warehousing with Open Source Technologies (or why not to use Data Marts in 2010)

The role of business intelligence within corporations and governments is to store, improve and analyse key information in order to make data-driven decisions. However these projects suffer from a high failure rate due to the complexity and significant costs in establishing a data warehouse. Successful data warehousing projects are based on a combination of business sponsorship and solid database systems expertise.

This session will discuss the open source technologies, in a vendor neutral way, that can be brought together to provide data warehouse capabilities at a fraction of the setup costs for a traditional environment. The technologies will cover a range of areas including DBMS’s, development, ETL, reporting and data mining. Finally, this paper will discuss cutting-edge research and techniques to improve existing Business Intelligence systems.
